It’s already a great day because I woke up this morning!

When I got to the spot Scout – the man with the gorgous voice, was singing there.
It was raining this morning and the wall behind our spot was completely wet.
Me: Good thing it stopped raining
Scout: No – rain is a good thing – when it’s raining there are more people inside the subway. Snow – that’s a different story.
I wished Scout a great day, and he said “it’s already a great day because I woke up this morning!”.
It was so nice to see him in such a good mood.

Theo, who has been playing in the subway probably almost as long as I have, said ‘hi’ on his way to playing at 23rd street.
Theo

A guy said he saw me at the 59th street station a long time ago and asked me if I remember him…He said back then he talked to me, asking me if I was singing and I explained to him it was the saw singing. Of course, I answer this question many times every day, so it’s a bit difficult to remember everybody’s faces…

Today was a nice, leasurly day – I got to play the Bach ‘Agnus Dei’ for the first time in the subway (too bad the guy who is a Bach fan passed by when I was playing a different piece…but at least it was also a Bach piece, so he was happy).

    Hi there,

Thanks for sending me your blog link via MySpace. I enjoy reading about what’s going on in the mind of the subway performer!

    Keep sawin’

All your references sing of the New York of the great years of my life in the 1970s. Union Square station seems like home to me–and it almost was for a week or so I didnt have an apartment back in 1968–and Atlantic Avenue living under the shadow of the Williamsburg Bank, of course they have changed the name, but to the faithful it will always be the Williamsburg.

Oh how I miss the island of my birth, my years of youth, revolution, friendly promiscuity. All missing then was a beautiful, intelligent women, pouring her heart out on a saw.

Will have to check you out when I make my inevitable return to the island where I was born, sweet Manhattan

Tony Thomas who is right on the beach near Miami where they think it is cold because it went down to 60 today!

    Hi Tony,

Thank you for your very nice words!
I share your feelings- there’s no place like NYC. Though – so many New Yorkers dream of moving to Florida – half my neighborhood moved down there. I totally relate – winters here are not fun (I’m supposed to go shovel snow now…), but, I just got a note from a friend in Alaska – he was happy that it is ONLY 20 below zero there today – “not so bad” as he said…!

Manhattan misses the sound of your banjo. Come back soooooooon!

    All the best,

    Natalia
