When I play the saw in public, oftentimes people come forward to tell me about some other saw player that they know or have seen. I perform in Israel frequently and so I came to hear about many saw players there. What surprised me was that even in such a tiny country as Israel, most of the saw players there had no idea there were other saw players in their own country! Naturally I had to remedy that, so I organized a mini musical saw festival in Tel-Aviv.

    Hello!
I am a french fiddle player living in Montreal and willing to go this summer to NYC. I am fond of playing in the street and I wonder if I should get some permit to do so or if I can feel free to play wherever I want in New York City… I guess not. Do you think you could tell if it is easy to play “freelance” ? Your blog is really nice and I am quiet fascinated by your instrument…
    Thank you very much, hélène.

    Hi Helen,

I understand you are asking about playing in the street and not in the subway.
Legally one is supposed to get a permit to play on the street in NYC. It costs $50 for two weeks and it’s for one designated spot of your choice.
If you play without a permit, you will probably be fine, but you might get thrown out by the police. Also – you are supposed to stand on the sidewalk side that is by the road and not by the store fronts. Store owners might call the police on you if you stand next to them (they own 1/2 of the sidewalk while the city owns the half that’s by the road).

Let me know if by ‘street’ you actually meant everywhere in public spaces (including the subway and parks) – there are different regulations for the different spaces.

    All the best,

    Natalia
